The East Coast Meadmaker Of The Year is a circuit competiton for amateur meadmakers. Points will be awarded to winners in each of the four qualifying competitions; the winner will be crowned East Coast Meadmaker Of The Year for 2016. (The circuit actually begins in October 2016, with Valhalla: The Mead-ing Of Life.)
Why are we doing this? Because we love mead, and it's fun! But aside of that, we want to promote competetive home meadmaking, and honor the best amateur meadmakers.
Each of the four qualifying competitions is free to set their own entry requirements, but in general any mead that fits either the 2008 or 2015 BJCP Mead Style Guidelines. Any mead you enter must be made on your own home equipment; you cannot enter meads made on professional equipment (i.e. a "pro-am"). While the qualifying competitions may have specific categories for commerical meads, only homemade meads qualify for the ECMMOTY (hereinafter referred to as ECMMOTY).
Points are tallied for each winning mead in each of the four qualifying competitions. You will earn three (3) points for each first place, two (2) points for each second place, one (1) point for each third place, and a half (0.5) point for honorable mention. In addition, a Best Of Show award will earn six (6) points, first-runner-up BOS earns five (5) and second runner-up BOS (4). There are some tie-breakers, but that's getting overly detailed, eh?
At the conclusion of Mead Free Or Die, the meadmaker with the most points will become the East Coast Meadmaker Of The Year.
